Java Virgin

Hey everyone,

I want to learn Java SO badly but I get lost everywhere I turn. I know that there is a ton of free material on the Internet I can use to become a Java prodigy however I do not know where to start. Let me get to the point quicker so that I can start this journey faster.

I want to build/create/develop my own Point of Sale program (if there is a better alternative to Java for this build, please let me know) In my line of work I have not seen the right application for my needs yet. The program(s) that I used and am using today come close but yet fail to deliver completely to my needs. So I decided to conjure my own. I am NOT trying to ask of you to build it for me, I am asking you for directions. I consider myself pretty advanced in Excel programming but perhaps it might be totally unrelated to Java. You should know that what I lack in experience I make up for in determination and hard work. Finally I want to learn Java also because I want to be able to teach my kids another new language when they're ready for it. Hope I still have you interested in helping me.

The list is looooonger than what I just described but it's just for you to get an idea what I want to create. I am not thinking of hitting a homerun or scoring a touchdown overnight, although I want to start somewhere and I am sure somebody is itching to help me right now.
